8 Easy Ways to Keep Your Hair Healthy

Hair-Fall-PreventionMany of my clients say that aside from their new cut or color, the best part of leaving my salon is running their hands through hair that actually feels healthy. They tell me they wish their strands could feel so strong and look so shiny between appointments, but by the time they come to see me, their color is often faded, their ends are sometimes fried, and their overall texture has lost its luster.

Luckily, I have some super-simple tips to keep hair healthy, strong, and damage-free. Here’s how to make sure your mane gets proper TLC:

1. Eat Plenty of Iron-Rich Foods.

Iron and zinc help hair follicles grow, so be sure to eat plenty of healthy, nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, fish, beans, quinoa, and yogurt. And if you’re not a vegetarian, consider adding a few servings of lean red meat a couple days a week, and try adding vitamin C-rich foods like oranges to non-meat sources to boost iron absorption.

2. Use a Heat Protector Before Styling.HeatStyling_460x250

This step is so important, but so many people skip it! Don’t reach for the flat iron or hair dryer without running a good heat protector through your hair first. I love Redken’s Iron Shape and  Hot Sets, and Icon Air Shine. Not sure where to buy them? Don’t worry, we sell all three in the salon!

3. Stop Stressing About Hair Loss.

If I had a dime for every time a client has called me freaking out over how many hairs end up in the drain…! The bottom line is: don’t stress. It’s totally normal to lose between 100-150 strands of hair every day. As long as you’re not losing clumps or developing bald patches, you’re fine!

4. Comb Wet Hair with Extreme Care.

Rather than ripping through your hair with a big brush, gently work a wide-tooth comb through strands when they’re wet.

You might not like to hear this if you’re growing your hair out, but the only real way to maintain healthy ends is to get regular trims. It may seem counter-intuitive, but trust me: you’ll get long, luscious locks much faster if you regularly snip the ends! Book an appointment and I’ll take care of you.

6. Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day.

This is a tip most of my clients are happy to abide by–no shampooing means shorter showers and less prep time! But if your scalp tends to get greasy, you may not love the idea of skipping the suds. Dry shampoo is a great way to keep your roots fresh and your hair full of volume. 7. Avoid Washing Color-Treated Hair with Hot Water.

This is a big one for any dye-hards. Hot water feels good on the body but it wreaks havoc on hair color, fading the hue you tried so hard to achieve. You don’t have to endure icy conditions to keep your color, but try to keep the temp lukewarm when you rinse and your color and shine will stay vibrant.

8. Treat Dry Hair to a Split End Repair or Clear Gloss Treatment.IMG_1674

My favorite way to instantly revive locks between cut and color appointments is to apply a split end repair or clear gloss treatment. Both of these are excellent ways to mend broken hair fibers and lock in color and shine.
